Oranges for colds and bronchitis — 3 home remedies with real citrus
The cold arrives and with it the airways get creative. Coughs, congestion, bronchitis. The nearest pharmacy is open round the clock, but the orange has been doing its job for centuries, long before effervescent tablets existed.
Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system — that is confirmed by EFSA, not a herbalist with scented candles. A whole orange contains 50 to 70 mg of vitamin C. Two oranges a day cover the recommended daily intake. It does not prevent colds (no single food does), but it contributes to keeping your defence system working as it should.
That said: there are three preparations using orange, ginger and other ingredients that have been used as winter home remedies for generations. They do not replace a doctor. But they help, taste better than any cough syrup and take ten minutes to prepare.
1. Orange juice with ground almonds
Almonds provide vitamin E, selenium and magnesium. Orange juice provides the vitamin C. Together, they support your defences naturally.
Squeeze one orange. Add two teaspoons of ground almonds. Mix and drink before bed. Comforting, filling and considerably more pleasant than any pharmacy sachet.
2. Black tea with orange and ginger
Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and a warming effect that helps with congestion. Prepare a black tea, add a teaspoon of grated ginger, the juice of one orange and a tablespoon of orange blossom honey. Let it steep for five minutes.
If you use freshly picked oranges, the aroma when squeezing is already therapeutic. No exaggeration: the volatile compounds in the fresh peel release limonene, which has a proven relaxing effect.
3. Orange, ginger and garlic preparation
Three oranges, 3-4 garlic cloves, a tablespoon of grated ginger and honey. Squeeze the juice, add crushed garlic and ginger. Heat until it begins to boil, remove from heat and let stand for ten minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey.
Not the most elegant dish in the repertoire. But it works as a home complement on the worst winter days.
Frequently asked questions
Does the orange cure bronchitis?
No. No food cures bronchitis on its own. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system (an EFSA-confirmed claim). Home remedies with orange are a complement, not a substitute for medical care.
Is juice or the whole orange better?
For vitamin C, both work. But the whole orange contains fibre (pectin) that juice lacks. If you are unwell and struggling to eat, warm juice with ginger is a good option.
Why fresh oranges rather than carton juice?
Vitamin C degrades over time, with light and heat. Carton juice has been pasteurised and packaged for weeks. A freshly picked orange retains its full vitamin content.
