Orange scent and anxiety: what the studies show, and what they don’t
The smell of a freshly peeled orange changes the mood of a kitchen. Anyone who has peeled a proper orange knows that. Whether that smell can treat anxiety is another matter, and it is worth separating what has been studied from what simply gets repeated.
What has been studied
The dentist's waiting room (Vienna, 2000). A team at the University of Vienna scented a dental surgery's waiting room with orange essential oil and compared those patients with a group who waited without it. The women who smelled the orange reported less anxiety, a better mood and more calm. The men, true to form, remained exactly as nervous as before. A later study by the same group, with orange and lavender, pointed the same way.
Receptors in the brain (Bochum). Professor Hanns Hatt's team at Ruhr University Bochum tested hundreds of scent molecules on GABA receptors, the same ones some tranquillisers act on. A few activated them strongly. Note, though: the work was done in the lab and on mice, not on people sniffing an orange in the living room.
A thesis in Munich. In her doctoral thesis, researcher Julia Eidt studied orange and lavender scents in older people and observed improvements in mood and sleep. Interesting work, but a single piece of it.
What cannot be claimed
These studies do not show that orange scent cures anxiety, depression or insomnia. The groups are small, the effects were measured with questionnaires and the results have not yet been confirmed on any scale. Aromatherapy can accompany medical treatment, never replace it. If anxiety is running your life, it is a matter for a doctor, not a greengrocer.
What science does say about oranges and health is gathered on our page on oranges and health.

What we can promise is more modest. An orange picked on the day you order smells far stronger than one that has spent weeks in cold storage. Ours arrive with no wax and no post-harvest chemicals, so the peel can scent your home without a second thought: there are ideas in 5 ways to use orange peel. And if you would like that smell in your own kitchen, here are our Valencia oranges.
